The Origins
Massey Ferguson didn’t start with tractors. In fact, they didn’t even start as Massey Ferguson. Originally, they were known as Massey-Harris, an exporter of smaller farm supplies like reapers and mowers, starting in the early 1900s. It wasn’t until after WWI that the company started exploring the bigger equipment market, like tractors. As their product line solidified, they became an industry leader during the following economic recession, catapulting them to the top. However, this wavered a bit as the market continued to bounce around and crash. At the same time, a man named Harry Ferguson was making his way from Belfast to America with inspired tractor design innovations. As fate would have it, a series of misfortunes would lead to Ferguson and his designs joining Massey-Harris in 1953, changing the company to Massey Ferguson. This was the beginning of a beautiful partnership.
